Infant Hip Ultrasound

An infant hip ultrasound is a safe and painless imaging test used to evaluate the development of a baby’s hip joints. This specialized screening is the primary tool for early diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), ensuring your baby receives the right care at the right time.

How to Prepare

There is no special medical preparation needed for your baby’s hip ultrasound. To keep your baby comfortable, we recommend dressing them in a two-piece outfit that is easy to remove from the waist down. It is also a good idea to bring a spare diaper and a bottle or pacifier, as babies are often most relaxed when they are fed and calm during the exam.

Common Reasons for This Exam

  • Assess for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)
  • Follow up on a clinical finding during a physical exam (such as a 'hip click')
  • Evaluate if there is a family history of hip dysplasia
  • Routine screening for babies born in a breech position
  • Monitor the effectiveness of hip treatment or bracing

What This Exam Can Show

The ultrasound shows the hip joint's ball and socket (the femoral head and the acetabulum). It can show whether the socket is deep enough to hold the ball securely, whether the hip is loose or moves out of place, and how the hip is responding to treatment. Every exam is read by a board-certified radiologist, and results are sent to your baby's provider.
