Pediatric Kidney & Urinary Ultrasound

A renal and bladder ultrasound is a safe, painless exam that uses sound waves to create images of your child’s kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It helps doctors evaluate the size, shape, and health of the urinary system without any radiation.

How to Prepare

Preparation depends on the exam ordered and your child's age. Older children may be asked to drink water before the exam so the bladder is full. Our team will give you exact instructions when you schedule. Dress your child in comfortable clothing and bring a favorite toy or tablet.

Common Reasons for This Exam

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Persistent bedwetting or voiding issues
  • Follow-up on findings from a prenatal ultrasound
  • Abdominal pain or swelling near the kidneys
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • High blood pressure in children

What This Exam Can Show

  • Kidney stones or cysts
  • Structural abnormalities in the bladder or ureters
  • Hydronephrosis (swelling due to fluid backup)
  • Masses or unusual growths
  • Signs of scarring from previous infections
  • Every exam is read by a board-certified radiologist, and results are sent to the child's provider.
