Pediatric Ultrasound

Ultrasound is one of the safest ways to look inside a child's body. It uses sound waves instead of radiation, is painless, and lets parents stay with their child during the exam. Our sonographers are experienced in imaging infants, children and teens and take extra time to keep them calm and comfortable.

Child's Health Checkup

How to Prepare

Preparation depends on the exam your child's provider ordered; our team will give you exact instructions when you schedule. For abdominal exams, children do not eat or drink 4 hours before the study (or skip one meal). For bladder or pelvic exams, your child may need a full bladder. Bring a favorite toy, blanket, tablet or snack for after the exam, and dress your child in comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing.

Common Exams for Children

abdominal ultrasound; kidney and bladder (renal) ultrasound; pelvic ultrasound; scrotal ultrasound; neck and thyroid ultrasound; soft tissue lumps and bumps; hip ultrasound for infants; vascular (Doppler) ultrasound; echocardiogram.

Tips for Parents

Explain the exam in simple words: it's like a camera that takes pictures with a warm gel. You can stay with your child the whole time. Siblings are welcome if another adult can supervise them.

Note: Every exam is read by a board-certified radiologist, and results are sent to your child's provider.
