Scrotal Ultrasound

Ultrasound of the scrotum is the primary imaging method used to evaluate disorders of the testicles, epididymis (the tubes next to the testicles that collect sperm) and scrotum. It is a noninvasive test that is safe and painless and helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.

How to Prepare

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You will need to remove clothing and jewelry in the area being examined. No other preparation is required.

Common Reasons for This Exam

abnormal testicular consistency; suspected testicular tumor; scrotal or inguinal hernia; hydrocele or spermatic cord hydrocele; inguinal lymph node enlargement; blood in the semen; infertility; trauma to the area.

How This Exam Helps

The exam is used to determine whether a lump in the scrotum is cystic or solid, and where it is; evaluate trauma to the scrotal area; find the cause of testicular pain or swelling, such as inflammation or torsion; evaluate causes of infertility such as varicocele; and locate an undescended testis.

Note: Every exam is read by a board-certified radiologist.
